TYPES OF WINE

Choosing the perfect wine is all about personal preference. Appreciating wine starts with finding what you like and building from there. Once you have discovered the basics, start experimenting with different flavors. Do not rush the process. Understanding the fundamentals will bring you one step closer to finding your signature taste and mastering the essence of wine.

The types of wine are typically categorized by red, white, blush, sparkling and dessert. Understanding the difference in grapes will help you distinguish between flavors and identify the pure elements of each concoction.

WHITE: White wine is typically made from white grape juice or skinned red grapes. The color appears yellow or golden and carries a light flavor. Some great white wines to start with are Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes in these selections account for several of the great white wines around the world. White wine is often served chilled, but can be slightly more aromatic and flavorful if served at a warmer temperature.

RED: Red wine carries a bold, strong and complex flavor, and is typically served at room temperature. Slightly chilling your red wine may enhance the experience and heighten the flavors. The skin of red or purple grapes gives red wine its powerful flavor. The most popular red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz.

BLUSH: Blush wine or rose wine is made with red grapes and carries a sweet, light flavor. Blushes are pink in color and served chilled. The red grapes used in Blush are only left in contact with the skin for a few hours to produce the pink hue. White Zinfandel is the most popular blush. If you are not ready for the bold, heavy flavor of red wine, opt for a blush wine instead. The sweet, soft flavor will prepare you for the demands of red.

SPARKLING: Sparkling wine was originally produced in the Champagne region of France, allowing the name champagne to be associated with sparkling wine. Champagne, or sparkling wine, contains carbon dioxide bubbles occurring naturally with fermentation giving it a sweet, fizzy flavor.

DESSERT WINES: Dessert wines have high sugar content, making them sweet and delicious. dessert wine, or ice wine, is served chilled and usually consumed as a dessert at the end of a meal or is paired with a dessert. Harvesting grapes late in the season when sugar levels are very high gives dessert wine its candy-like flavor.

As you continue on your wine journey, keep in mind the types of wine you like and do not like, as well as the reasons why. This will help you to distinguish the subtle differences in the taste and aroma of each flavor.

Choosing a wine based on price, age or food compatibility will only hinder your experience. Remember to always choose a wine best suited to your taste. Wine festivals or wine tastings are great ways to learn and explore several different types of wine. Once you have mastered the basics, you are well on your way to becoming a wine connoisseur and understanding the true artistry of wine production.
